Raw Ohio Honey from Smith Homestead

Did you know?

-Europeans brought honeybees to America in 1638

-Today, at least 2/3 of the fruit and vegetable crops in the U.S. depend on bees for proper pollination.

-Honey never spoils. Honey that was found in King Tut's tomb was thought be over 2,000 years old. It was still good!

-There are 3 types of honeybees, Queens, Drones, and Workers.

-The queen can lay up to 2,000 eggs per day.

-Drones do not have a stinger. Drones are generally considered slackers because their only job is to mate with the queen. Before you say they have it easy, consider... as soon as they mate once they die.  Any drones left that haven't mated get kicked out of the hive each year before winter. Doesn't sound like a good job after all.

-Just to make 16 ounces of honey, bees will need to collectively visit approximately 2 million flowers and fly 55,000 miles (that may explain why, during the peak of the nectar flows, that bees literally will work themselves to death in 35-45 days!)

-The average worker bee makes 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in a lifetime.
